Nothing in football is scarcer than goals, and nothing is more valuable than a player who scores them with 15 years of career ahead of him. This is the live ranking of the best strikers aged 21 and under, worldwide, updating as new matches land in the data.
Why this type of player matters
Young strikers are the most expensive profile in football for a simple reason: they're the only asset that can win you matches now and triple in value at the same time. A 20-year-old scoring regularly in a top flight is simultaneously a first-team solution, a resale jackpot and a decade-long answer to the hardest position to recruit.
They're also the profile where early evidence matters most. Finishing ability shows up young: a striker scoring non-penalty goals at a real rate by 20 is overwhelmingly likely to keep scoring, while creators and defenders often need years of development before their numbers stabilise. That makes a ranking like this genuinely predictive rather than just descriptive, and it's why clubs' recruitment models weight top-flight goals at a young age so heavily.
The catch is that most public conversation about young strikers runs on hype, agents and highlight compilations. The data cuts through: minutes played, goals scored, chances received. No narrative required.
Why we use these stats
- Non-penalty goals is the raw output, with penalties stripped out. Penalties carry a fixed high value and are handed to designated takers, so they flatter some totals and hide others; removing them leaves only open-play scoring.
- NP goals per 90 is the ranking stat. Young players rarely play full seasons, so per-90 scoring puts the 1,200-minute breakthrough talent and the 3,000-minute regular on level terms. (Why per-90 and not totals? We've written about that.)
- xG per 90 sits alongside as the sustainability check. It measures the quality of chances the player receives. A striker scoring in line with a healthy xG is running on repeatable service; one scoring far above a thin xG is running hot, and hot streaks end. What xG actually measures is explained here.
How the ranking works
The pool is every player FDscout classes as a striker, aged 21 or under, across 20 top-flight leagues. The window is always the last 12 months of league football. To qualify, a player needs at least 900 league minutes, a real sample rather than five bright cameos. Qualified players are ranked by non-penalty goals per 90. A player new to the top ten carries a green New tag for his first week.

How to read it
The most important read here is the gap between the two per-90 columns. Scoring above xG per 90 means the finishing is currently outrunning the chances; that's a genuine skill signal at this volume, but check the player's profile for whether it has held across seasons. Scoring below a strong xG per 90 is often the more interesting case for a buyer: the player is getting into scoring positions constantly and the goals haven't arrived yet. Movement is the hard part of striker play; finishing usually catches up. Some of the best value signings in recent years were exactly this profile, bought before the goals made the price move.
Who should want these players
Everyone, which is the problem: this is the most competitive market in football. The practical edge is breadth. The big clubs' scouts saturate the big five leagues, but a U21 striker scoring at 0.5+ non-penalty goals per 90 in Norway, Belgium or Brazil is producing the same evidence with far fewer eyes on him.
